PN. {Mr Northey} X4117 CWB5/LH {Mr Haworth} 25.3.25. CAR NO. 62-AU - MOY. Yesterday, in company with HO and Mr. Russellwhite, I retested this car, after Messrs. Barker & Co., had dealt with the points requiring attention on the body. As the result of this test, I am satisfied that the lessening of the transmission groan, with an alteration in the shock absorbers, as reported in memo CWB4/LH {Mr Haworth} 23.3.25. was only a coincidence, as thought at the time. The action of the spring drive coupling does not however, appear to be the same at all times, probably due to differences in temperature of the coupling itself and the lubricating oil. It always appears to be more effective in reducing the groan the longer the car is running. As it is at present, under normal running conditions, the groan at 20 m.p.h. is practically eliminated whilst that at 30 m.p.h. is considerably reduced in intensity although still quite noticeable in the area of the body just surrounding the head of a passenger sitting in the back seat. Elsewhere in the body it is quiet. With reasonable driving - that is, without deliberately playing on the period, the car is now considered passable and Messrs. Barker have been so informed. I requested Mr. Russellwhite to again see the driver of this car on its return to Mr. Moy and impress upon him the desirability of avoiding continuously driving round 30 m.p.h. as far as possible.
