| To Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from Sg. {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} re Continental Tests Sg {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} 16/E4.2.38 Policy? I am in receipt of your Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 3/R2.2.38 but I am afraid I cannot understand it because you refer to running Mx {John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} 's recommended schedule when the car has completed 10,000 miles at Chateauroux(French test region). As the result of discussions back in November Mx. {John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} was asked to put up his recommendations, which he did in Mx {John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} 12/N.6.1.38 of which you had a copy. A reference to this shows quite clearly that it was not the idea to run 10,000 miles at Chateauroux(French test region) and then start something different. I need not indicate what it does say because it would only be repeating the memo. but is really the opposite of what you seem to have in mind. I have felt for years, as I think you know, that the normal Chateauroux(French test region) testing, whereby the cars are driven at speed round and round a circuit was wrong and did not produce the best results from a testing point of view and I am distressed to find that, after having ventilated - and got it agreed that the whole scheme should be revised, no notice has been taken of it.
