| X4329 W/B PN. {Mr Northey} c. to Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} 5/H16.5.23. Increased Friction Shock Absorbers - 20-HP Trials Cars. With reference to your PN {Mr Northey} 4/DN15.5.23, also Bk {A. Birkett - Commercial Manager} 1/DN8.5.23 and further to our EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} /Thn4/Hl0.5.23 to Bk. {A. Birkett - Commercial Manager} we take it you are evidently acting on the information contained in R's memo when he was at Le Canadel(Henry Royce's French residence), and after driving the Saloon car, in which he stated that the shock absorbers could be 100% stronger. After further consultation on this matter, we believe that better results would be obtained by retaining the present springs and making the shock absorbers single stage only. At present there are two stages, the first approximately 25 Lbs and the second approximately 50 Lbs. The scheme is to make them one stage of 50 Lbs. This we are now doing on your Landaulet trials car No. 40-G-8. As a matter of fact there are no springs available at the present time to increase the strength 100%. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} reports that he is testing out different settings of shock absorbers on the 20-HP which is now running 10,000 mile test, as it is his intention to send through some standardisation sheet as soon as he is in a position to recommend some suitable alteration. We should therefore be glad to have a report from you of the behaviour of the shock absorbers when set as above described on 40-G-8. Although one may appreciate that in a number of respects the increased friction of the shock absorbers has advantages, there are possibly disadvantages, one of which is the increased wear and tear on the shock absorbers, and whether they will be able to stand such use when in actual service. I take it, in view of memo Bk {A. Birkett - Commercial Manager} 1/DN8.5.23, copy of which was sent to Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} , that Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will appreciate the urgency which is evidently required in regard to some standard alteration being made to the setting of the shock absorbers.
