Hanbury - Head Complaints} Grylls, Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Limited, D E R B Y. 6th July, 1936. My dear Grylls, With reference to the rear axle construction as discussed during your visit of last week, am enclosing herewith some literature and drawings which I have obtained from The Kirkstall Forge Ltd. and I trust these will enable you to obtain a more accurate idea of the job. The catalogues will, I believe, cover the primary points with respect to the construction of the actual casing, although I might mention that the photograph showing the grain flow was taken some few years ago, since when they have been able to stamp the axles much thinner, and they can come down to as thin as 1/4" thick. As mentioned during my talk with you these people are mainly concerned with commercial vehicle industry and in this respect I would also point out that they supply practically all the large vehicle rear axles for the whole industries, either in the form of complete axles or axle casings, and they do make a really first class job. The general schemes as outlined could, of course, be readily adapted on pleasure vehicles, and for your own particular type of bevel I trust the following remarks with respect to the drawings enclosed will be of utility.
