- 3 - AUSTIN 10 HP -cont'd- We have removed the cylinder head on three occasions to remove carbon and fit new gaskets which have failed, and are now grinding the valves in for the first time since receiving the car at 3,500 miles. Speedo Reading. Cylinder head de-carbonised, valves not touched 5,152 N.S. front hub ball race failed. 6,864 Cylinder head gasket failed. 8,309 & 10,778. The gasket failure was mainly due to distortion of the aluminium cylinder head. This we refaced and have since had no further trouble. This car has a remarkably good oil consumption which was 3,860 m.p.g. at start and has since maintained an average of 2,500 m.p.g. The maximum bore wear of this engine taken at 15,000 miles = .006". The body is in good condition and free from rattles. One of the main faults with this car, as with most small cars is the squeak from the road springs, we have tried various types of interleaving to cure same, with no effect LANCIA APRILLIA. The Lancia has now reached a total mileage of 50,000 miles, 21,000 miles since being in our possession. The most outstanding feature of this car is the engine, the performance being remarkably good and apart from a few electrical faults of the Starter Motor, Dynamo etc. it has been very reliable and trustworthy, we have as yet had no occasion to dismantle the engine for decarbonisation. We cannot however, speak so highly of the chassis which has given us a considerable amount of trouble, particularly the transmission and suspension. Speedo Reading.
