1020. March 23rd 1937. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}1/AP. Mr.T.Arnold, Cadillac Motor Car Co., Detroit, MICHIGAN U.S.A. Dear Sir, In response to a request by Mr.Robotham, we are preparing some Aluminium Tin Bearing Alloy which will be despatched to you during the next 2 or 3 days. There will be 3 bars, 5 1/2" long by 2 3/4" outside diameter, the internal bore being 1 3/4" at the large end and approximately 1" at the small end, this we have left as cast for your machining. As we presume that you will make a set of bearings from this material, the following heat treatment should be given when the bearings havebeen roughly machined. This consists of 12 hours at a constant temperature of 160° - 180° C. and then finished machining carried out. The running clearance which has been found most satisfactory with this material is 1 thou. per inch dia. for big end bearings and 1 1/2 thou. per inch dia. for main bearings. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
