Hydraulic Dampers. Many thanks for your memos on hydraulic dampers. Needless to say, as these are now in production, we are more than anxious to get the glands right. We are somewhat mystified as to why, with exactly the same gland packing and spring load, the new type dampers should be giving so much trouble. If venting the glands is the solution to the trouble as your tests suggest, some how local pressure must be built up at this point, and we are fixing pressure gauges on our rigs to see if we can confirm the results. We want you to let Bell fix up glands in the standard condition and demonstrate to him that they leak because his damper tests have shewn that they should be at least as good as on the old type dampers. Heat under the Scuttle. We suggest that the louvred bonnet you had on Peregrine 3 may have had a lot to do with this, with the low temperature experienced. Return of Old Axle. As the duty on the parts sent out is £17.0.0. they have been covered by a temporary importation permit. Therefore the old parts should be returned to Derby as soon as possible; They can be sent as cheaply as possible; there is no urgency.
