X457. S/W..Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to PN.{Mr Northey} C3/08.6.32. x7960. Re Continental Type Trials Cars. --------o-------- We are in a very difficult position in regard to one of our Demonstration cars, viz. 60-JS.{Mr Johnson's Secretary} This is the car, you will remember, that PN.{Mr Northey} was not satisfied with from the point of view of "jellying" and I understand it is one of the worst "jelly-ers" that we have had - much worse than 61-JS{Mr Johnson's Secretary} and 85-JS{Mr Johnson's Secretary}, 85-JS{Mr Johnson's Secretary} being fitted with a similar type of body to 60-JS.{Mr Johnson's Secretary} Our present trouble is that Paris had arranged a number of trial runs with prospective customers and Press men, including M.Faroux, one of the leading Motoring Correspondents in France who was going to take the car down to Le Mans next week, and after that it was to go to Aix. Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} telephoned me this morning that he has given two runs and been out on the car himself, and he confirms that the "jellying" is so bad that it is impossible to drive over their bad roads of pave and pot-holes, without reducing the speed so that it would never impress any of the fast Continental drivers. Is there anything you can suggest to help us out of this trouble? We are reluctant to send 85-JS{Mr Johnson's Secretary} out there, because we want it for important work in London, although I understand from PN.{Mr Northey} that so far as the "jellying" is concerned, it is considerably superior to 60-JS.{Mr Johnson's Secretary} I should be glad if you would kindly consider this matter and telephone me tomorrow morning if possible, as meantime Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} is holding up all his demonstrations to fast drivers. Presumably you have nothing you can lend us that might do the job? C. PS. Incidentally, in this connection, a car we have just delivered to Mr. Fairhurst, No.16-MS has had to be taken in to the Paris Depot with the same "jellying." | ||
