A.T. Colwell, Esq.,
Chief Engineer,
Thompson Products, Inc.,
CLEVELAND. U.S.A.

Dear Mr. Colwell,

We are at present running experimentally a high output side valve engine which appears to need special exhaust valve cooling to get the best results. We have proved this by using an ordinary type of salt-cooled valve with a hollow stem only, and this has immediately improved the performance of the engine. We feel, however, that some special technique may be desirable on a side valve engine since the salt does not naturally fall to the hottest portion of the valve as on an overhead valve engine.

We have read with interest your article on Poppet Valves in the 'Automobile Engineer' dated September 1931, but you do not specifically state which type of valve you recommend for side valve engines. Should we, in your opinion, get better results from copper-cooling than salt-cooling ?

Yours sincerely,
