P. Herrick, Esq.,
Chief Engineer,
Lycoming Motors Ltd.,
WILLIAMSPORT, U.S.A.

Dear Mr. Herrick,

I believe that you have obtained more horse-power out of the side valve engine than anybody else in America, and wondered, therefore, whether you could give me any information.

In getting your high output, have you found it necessary to use sodium or copper-cooled exhaust valves, and if so, what type of valve have you found gives the best results?

We, of course, have had extensive experience on ordinary salt-cooled overhead valves as used in aircraft practice, but we have had no experience on side valves of this type.

Yours sincerely,
