-2- Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Smth.11/KW.20.2.36. (5) You have promised to look into the question of obtaining better balance in the 13 1/2" plates than hitherto. None of the plates which you have supplied us with have been in correct balance, and some of them have been more than 1/2 oz. in. out. (6) You have promised to urge the outstanding items ordered in our letters of the 11th and 13th inst., if they have not already been despatched. Will you please let us know what method you advocate for marking the engine timing positions on the clutch. With our design of clutch housing and inspection cover we have to make the timing marks on the side of the clutch cover. Up to the present we have done this by cleaning up the surface of the cover locally with emery paper and then electrically etching the marks. We appreciate that by doing this we are exposing the cover to rust, and also that we are encouraging cracks to develop along the etched lines. Can you recommend any better procedure, or, in any case, can you recommend a treatment for the surface of the cover in the neighbourhood of the marks which will prevent rust ? Would it be practicable for you to stamp the timing marks on the covers before you give them the anti-rust treatment ? It is our practice to locate the timing marks correctly to within +- 1/10°, and these limits might be closer than you could work to by this method. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
