R.E. 950a. (20 T) (S.H. 326. 31-1-21). Bm. 2/6/15. X4050 S/W, RECEIVED 1 JUN 1921 RE:- STRAIGHT SIDE TYRES. We have been approached by The Dunlop Company, with a view to our adopting straight side motor tyres as part of our standard equipment in lieu of the present beaded edge type. Dunlops claim many advantages from the straight sided tyre, which is now being produced in multiple ply cord casings. Amongst other advantages, Dunlops claim the following:- (1) Give greatly increased mileage and, therefore, more economical to the user. (2) Are made to full dimensions, the sectional width exceeding the nominal size by 10%. (3) Are fitted to rims having one removable flange which permits of the easy fitting of all sizes of tyres without the use of levers. (4) Owing to their construction and increased width of rim, there is a larger air space, thus giving greatly increased cushioning capacity. (5) Are more efficient than canvas tyres, owing to the reduction of loss of power in transmission of the drive from wheel to road. We are not clear as to whether you have experimented with the Dunlop straight sided tyre with the view to adoption and there appear to be many other contingent factors before a decision could be given - for instance, it would apparently be necessary to fit wheels with a detachable flange, which would mean a variation in the present wheel equipment. Perhaps, if you have already considered the matter, you will be able to let us have your views, but if you have not done so, will you please send us your recommendations.
