Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} EFC. X 2628 EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}21/F21.4.20. STAMP: E F C APR 23 1920 RECEIVED. X.3922. RE. 19-LW PN.{Mr Northey} OPEN TRIALS CAR. X 2628 With reference to the above car which recently came to the works for attention, complaints re which I have brought to your attention, the following is an extract of report received from PN{Mr Northey} on this matter:- "In reply to your EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/F17.4.20., I do not quite know what you mean by re-bedding of the rear spring plates", unless it be a process of grinding, lapping and surfacing these plates together, but surely even if this be the case, an inevitable squeak would start in the adsence of lubrication and when oxidation set in. I can quite imagine that the fitting of Ferodo strips, sandwiched between flat steel plates, might be effective, as suggested by Mr. Royce. This car since its return from you still appears to have certain characteristics of an undesirable nature which were not in evidence before I took it to France. Although the "chunking" back of the transmission is considerably improved, resulting from your recent efforts, at the same time there is still a tendency to do this on the zero line between "some load" and "coasting", which demonstrates itself as an irritating little rattle, which one has immediately to kill by momentarily de-clutching. The engine certainly appears to me to be rough, I should like to know whether this also struck you". I should be glad to have any comments from you on the above.
