SPEEDOMETERS FOR RR. and BENTLEY CARS.
---------------------------------

Mr. Manwaring (Technical Representative) of Messrs. S. Smith & Sons, visited the Works today, when we took the opportunity of discussing the question of introducing instruments with concave dials and larger trip figures, and although we are still waiting to hear from Smiths as to the extra cost involved we suggest that instructions should be given immediately for the modified instruments to be put in hand, so that Smiths will be in a position to supply them against further orders which we have to place with them.

Smiths have already informed us that they will require approximately 4 months to bring through the new instruments, so that if we give them instructions now they will not be available before the end of June.

If the above is agreed to we should then be in a position to fit the modified instruments about the 42nd. chassis in U.2. series (Phantom ll) and the 1st. chassis in J.2. series (20/25 HP.)

In regard to the Bentley chassis, on which it is proposed to introduce larger trip figures in the speedometers, the present standard instruments are ordered up to the end of 'E' series, which will go on test about the 10th August.

We do not, of course, know how far Smiths have got with the manufacture of the parts for the present standard instruments, but if it is considered advisable to introduce on production as soon as they are available, this point will be 101 in 'E' series, providing instructions are given to Smiths forthwith.

If you are in agreement that we should go ahead, please let us know per return, so that we can issue the necessary instructions to Smiths, as otherwise they will have to produce some instruments of the present pattern to keep our production going.
