R.{Sir Henry Royce} has criticised the gear control on the 25 HP. car here - 16.G.IV. - on the score of undue heaviness of operation of the lever sideways, due to oil drag, and also too high a spring load and spring rating on the reverse stop.

To remedy the former trouble we suggest definitely counterboring by a few hundreths of an inch the well lubricated inner bearing in the aluminium of the change lever bracket from the outer end to such a depth that 1" of bearing remains adjacent to the gearbox face. This will remove 1.25" of bearing surface.

The outer bush is only 1.2" long and should not be altered unless the necessary improvement cannot be made on the inner bearing.

As regards the latter fault we find that the reverse stop on 16.G.IV. requires a load of 5 lbs. to commence its movement, and about 9 lbs. to depress it fully. This should be reduced to 2 lbs. initial load with an increase when fully compressed of not more than 50%. Max. 3 lbs.

The above modifications, if found satisfactory, should be made to all cars - 25HP., Phantom, J.3. and Peregrine.
