COPY. TC/C. HOOPER & CO, LTD., 54, St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} James's Street, S.W.1. 23rd September, 1926. Messrs Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Conduit St, W.1. Dear Sirs, Asbestos under floorboards of 'Phantom' Cars. In reply to your letter of the 17th instant - and in confirmation of Captain Pelham-Clinton's conversation with Mr. Cowen, we have to advise you that our new Demonstration Car the 'Euralite' sheet is attached to the underside of the floor-boards through distance pieces, allowing an air space of 3/4". We have also covered the underside of the heelboard and rear seatboard with this material in addition to lagging the swan neck of the exhaust pipe with asbestos string. After testing the Car for 2500 miles at high speeds on the Continent, our Managing Director found, that in spite of very hot weather in Spain, the interior temperature of the car was bearable and a considerable improvement over our previous efforts. In view of the likelihood of an Asbestos millboard disintegrating and being damaged by flying stones and the difficulty of supporting it to form an air space, we hesitate to abandon the use of 'Euralite' in favour of the Asbestos - at least, until we have carried out further tests, as at the moment, the most satisfactory result has been obtained by using the former substance. Yours faithfully, for Hooper & Co, Ltd., per. TC. | ||
