PETROL PUMP POSITION.

Confirming our discussion with you on petrol pumps, the following conclusions were reached:-

High-pressure Petrol Pump in the Frame.

If we have another failure on the high-pressure pump in the frame we shall have no further excuse to offer on petrol pumps. For this reason we regard it as of vital importance that every effort should be made to ensure that these pumps are satisfactory. The recent trouble experienced on 25/30 when going through a water splash may not be reproducible on a P.III, but these cars should be taken through a splash to see what happens. It may be necessary to fix up some sort of a screen.

The behaviour of a pump after going through a water splash should be confirmed in the cold chamber. As in any case it appears almost certain that the petrol pump in the frame will be more susceptible to moisture than the petrol pump on the dashboard. Every precaution should be taken to see that it is not affected by water. To this end, investigations should be made for

(a) precaution against the small springs on the make and break gear, and the corrosion of the pivot.

(b) It should be ascertained that the drain holes are in the best possible position.

High-pressure pumps already in production.

(a) The cars that were sent out with high-pressure pumps and were not inspected should be followed up, and these pumps changed for those that have been inspected.

(2) An endeavour should be made to get petrol pumps in the frame on all Trials cars and cars run by Company officials.

Petrol Pump Switches.

We should like a brief history of these switches, and an assurance that all switches which might possibly be defective have been changed. We should also check that the high-pressure pumps have not affected the reliability of the switches in any way.
