(3) Now crank the engine back through 13° until cylinder No.1 is 3° (.500 " on the flywheel periphery) before its top centre, and adjust the magneto coupling so that with the ignition lever still fully retarded the magneto break corresponding to cylinder No.1 is taking place at this point.

The magneto break for No.1 cylinder in the fully retarded position is indicated by the coincidence, as observed through the window under the lubricator on the top of the magneto, of a marked tooth on the distributor wheel with the red line on either side of the window (this being simultaneous with the appearance of the figure 1 in the centre of the front window on the distributor). The tooth in question is indicated by the tooth recesses on either side of this tooth being blacked.

Timing the magneto by means of this marked tooth will readily give the degree of accuracy which is required. In this connection it should be understood that attention to the magneto contact breaker, set correctly initially, is only necessary infrequently, i.e. at such intervals as the magneto or contact breaker might be removed for other reasons, e.g. trimming the contact points.

It must not be considered that the inability to view the magneto contact breaker in position, i.e. without a glass, is a draw-back. The time functioning of the magneto is amply provided for, as described, by the marked tooth on
