Blk.1/ML.4.8.40.

The operation planning and estimating of times has already been started, in conjunction with the B.U.S.M. and it is expected that this initial planning, sufficient to obtain a machine loading, will be completed within four weeks.

This will enable a final list of machines to be prepared and an estimate of the cost of the manufacture of the gun to be given.

The drawings for four out of the seven Sections, have been taken to the B.U.S.M. and have gone through Mr. Gardiner; they have been divided roughly into three classes i.e. large, medium and small, and they will be planned, and the tools will be drawn in this order so as to enable the large fixtures and long distance tools to be ordered first.

B.U.S.M. will supply us with copies of all operation lay-outs and tool drawings. The lay-out will also specify the size of the material required, which will enable the material cost to be calculated.

We have arranged to send B.U.S.M. a list of all the tools which have been made in the Experimental Department at Derby, in order to avoid unnecessary duplication. They are also taking into consideration whether dies have been made. Further dies will be made where advantageous for the quantity of 500.

The question of heat-treatment still remains to be settled, particularly in connection with the cyanide hardening. The use of heat-treated bar is also recommended in many cases.

In order to discuss these questions and also to see the assembly of the gun, it was arranged that Mr. Gardiner and his heat-treatment Superintendent will come to Derby on Tuesday next for a meeting. Other points for discussion will be :-

(a) Whether it is necessary to machine non-mating parts after heat-treatment.

(b) Whether polishing will suffice instead of grinding for finishing purposes.
