RE 40/50 H.P. MAGNETO DRIVE AND COUPLINGS.

Referring to N scheme 81, Mr. Royce yet raises one or two further points which require attention before we can proceed to make these two drives.

The coupling flanges halfway along the tube may be dispended with, and the driving tube made in one length to the smaller diameter. This is on account of the fact that it has been seen that we can detach the magneto reasonably by uncoupling one of the couplings of the drive in each case.

Referring to the serrated drive, the aluminium covers for the coupling should each be made in one piece. So that this can be done, the front driven coupling must be made a separate piece from the tube, and be fixed to the tube by means of a taper and nut. In addition to this taper, two solid keys should be milled on the end of the coupling hub, which should engage with two grooves in a small flange turned on the driving tube.

The details of the design should be as simple as possible, for example, no swelling is required on the outside of the front driving member, to correspond to the undercut at the bottom of the teeth. The same point applies to the coupling on the magneto shaft.

Simplification can also be effected in the design by making the webs of the driving tube couplings out of centre with the teeth, so that there is only one recess to make on one side.

The aluminium covers should have the correct hand of
