YOUR REF

17th July, 1939.

W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Esq.,
Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd.,
Derby.

Dear Mr. Robotham,

Many thanks for your letter of the 15th inst., the first part of which I am passing over to Mr. Howlett, as he was of the impression that Mr. Salt could be called upon at any time, and it was at his request that I wrote you.

Regarding the last paragraph of your letter, you mention that you are using AC.9 for Big End Bearings only and babbit for Main Bearings, but I am sure you will be pleased to know that the East Kent Road Car Co., who operate large vehicles, are having entire satisfaction from AC.9 Main Bearings as well as Big Ends on the 8.6 litre Leyland Diesel Engine.

Incidentally I am fully of the impression that Leylands themselves use RR.56 as Main Bearings. If this is so then I see no reason why AC.9 cannot be substituted.

I will admit that lubrication as a whole should be watched carefully, and further in the case of a fairly long Bearing such as rear Mains, which are also the thrust Bearings, it is probably advisable to make these Bearings in two halves - I am not, of course, speaking of the halves to complete the circle, but two halves lengthwise, with a view to reducing some of the expansion of the Bearing, as otherwise it means a big end clearance when cold which results in a certain amount of end movement of the shaft, which is to be avoided at all costs.

However, time alone will show how far it can be used as a Main Bearing in addition to Big End, but so far on the heavy diesel
