R.R. 950 (50H) (S.B. 849, 20-3-18) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2139. X9946 PN{Mr Northey}8/DN/21.12.23. TO Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM P.N. SECRET. I am entirely in sympathy with the remarks in your letter Hsl/LG20.12.23 addressed to C.J. I understand that R.{Sir Henry Royce} has agreed that the braking effect shall be equal on each of the four wheels, but so far it appears to be intended to allow the high speed servo to be fitted to all the 40/50's now being delivered and that he will not consider the torque-rod but insists on stronger front springs, the alternative being for you and Rg.{Mr Rowledge} to produce in parallel a chassis having variations of these species, on the lines we discussed when I was at Derby. I certainly should not accept or be willing to pass brakes on the lines of those fitted to the car I tried at Derby, or in which the effort was not capable of being made equal on each wheel. With regard to this chassis being ready by the end of January for me to take to France, I am not in the position to know how far this appears to be desirable or not, having regard to the importance of any modifications you may consider advisable to the engine before taking on such an extended test. I will look into the details of the coachwork on 46-PK, but probably this chassis with body, would be the best to use for the purpose if it is of a nature to allow of the engine to shew a good turn of speed, that is, if the windage, wings and weight are within reasonable limits.
