RR 755 (10H) (49888) 19/10/37 C.E.Co. COMPLETED 24.11.38. PHANTOM III STANDARDISATION OF PARTS Date Issued: 1.8.38. Sheet No.: F.34. Drg. No.: 83/69/70 L.O.P.S. Description: BAKELITE BALL PADS FOR CROSS STEERING TUBE JOINTS MACHINED FROM BAKELITE COY. ROD 1.300 DIA. Purpose: To obtain more constant friction load for preventing low speed wobbles. Brief Report and Remarks: Rig tests indicated that for same loss of friction load running time was 3 - 4 times as long as with bronze. Completed 12,000 on 39.EX in England. Loss of friction load was one third that of bronze. These parts transferred to 32.EX. and new set on 33.BX. have done further 7,000 miles satisfactory. In all tests wear has been negligible and mechanical condition perfect. When recommended for Introduction: IMMEDIATELY. Report References: By: By.{R.W. New Parts - Material: - 3.9. | Labour: - 1.6. | Burden: £0 2.7. | Total: £- 7.10. Decrease in Cost: £0 2.5. G/Kb. 8.10.38. Cost of Tools: £ 10.0d. Production Position and Comments: Bakelite ball pads to prevent low speed wobbles may be standardised when P.III is reintroduced on production at the 106th. chassis in 'D' series due to test 20th. March 1939. This modification will provide a saving of 2/5d. per chassis but will render scrap existing value £68.0.0d. and involve a tool cost of £1.10.0d. The combined scrap and tool cost of £69.10.0d. will be recovered after producing 579 chassis. Authorisation to Proceed: Introduce on the 106 Chassis in D Series. Signature: Sg.{Arthur F.
