R.R. 235 A (100 T) (S.F. 216 6-S-19) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2480 ORIGINAL, To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} R6/M9.10.22. GOSHAWK 11. SILENCER & CUTOUT. X4269 I am sorry that our attempt at the cutout is a failure. I do not want to revert to the scheme we adopted in the 40/50 for many reasons, so that we shall probably try again. I had thought that a butterfly valve could be embodied more easily than the valve we had fitted but I am not sure that it can be made close enough for second direct outlet. Evidently it is necessary to have a second opening in addition to the fishtail or more area at the fish-tail. Will you try a second fishtail always in use with present silencer to see if a wider one could always be in use?
