TO BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} C. to CJ. C. to HJ. C. to HOR. C. to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ✔ C. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} C. to EF. ORIGINAL R1/M1.12.22. RE. GOSHAWK. X 3592 X 4384 We have now altered the starter motor and embodied a Bijur type of pinion in place of the Bendix. This has been tested on one car and judging by impressions the noise and shock of this is much less than in the present pattern bendix. I believe it is of the utmost importance that we stop the manufacture of the present bendix and the starter motor to suit it, and proceed at once hurrying the standardisation sheet forward and stopping the manufacture of the present parts on the understanding that we shall be able to definitely prove it's superiority before the actual cars get into the hands of the customers. It would be absolutely suicidal to go on with the present scheme when we are sure that this modification is more hopeful of long life and sweet action, the present scheme although being a good specimen of the bendix drive does not promise to last long and will be very expensive should we have to replace large numbers.
