To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from ROY{Sir Henry Royce} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} ROY{Sir Henry Royce}1/MG8.1.37 CHASSIS LUBRICATION Arising out of the negotiations now proceeding with our present 4 suppliers, i.e. Prices, Shell, Wakefield, and Vacuum, covering the supply of such lubricants for 1937, and our recommendations in the Rolls and Bentley Instruction Books, Prices are particularly anxious we should include recommendation of their Lubricants as details attached: "Dealing further with the lubricants recommended as "set out in the Phantom III Books of Instruction, it is hoped "that in subsequent editions of this book, also of editions "of the "25" and "Bentley", that Belmoline A and Belmoline C "be included for water pump gland and wheel hub shells respect- "ively. In the case of the latter we have on numerous occasions "expressed a wish that Belmoline C should be included as an "alternative to Hoffmann ball bearing grease. At a little "earlier date the question of the suitability of Belmoline C "was raised with us for Hoffmann ball bearings and Mr. T.W. "Cooper, Managing Director, of Hoffmann Mfg.Co. wrote spec- "ially to Rolls-Royce confirming its complete suitability for "Hoffmann ball and roller bearings. "We understood that when Rolls-Royce made another "alteration in the recommendation, Belmoline C would "be added as a recommended grade. It is disappointing "to see that an alteration has been made in the current "issue of the Phantom III Book of Instructions, but without "including Belmoline C. "As regards the water pump requirements, Belmoline A "was, we believe, the first lubricant specifically prepared "for grease cups on water pumps circulating hot water. "It has been recommended and used for the purpose for "more than 25 years, and has long been recognised as a "standard preparation for this job. Other greases which "have at later dates been put on the market for pumps "circulating hot water, are more or less copies of "Belmoline A.{Mr Adams} Under such circumstances we feel that "Belmoline A might well be included in subsequent Rolls "and Bentley Books of Instruction." BY will recollect the Hoffmann Company did advise that, in their opinion, Belmoline C was completely suitable for Hoffmann Ball and Roller Bearings. Unless there are reasons of which I am unaware, possibly we could accede to Messrs. Prices' request to include (a) Belmoline C for our Wheel Bearings (b) Belmoline A for the Water Pump.
