Re "Goshawk" Starting Handle.

In accordance with Mr Elliott's EL/G8-12-20 we have modified "N" Scheme 653 to hold the handle into the lever by a taper, the grip being a plain brass tube with celluloid heavily moulded on. We have reduced the length of the crank arm from 7½ to 7", and altered the clamp on the front bearing so that it is parallel with the starting shaft. We have also made the collar for the spring in the form of a cowl to protect the bearing from mud and grit, and have shortened the snout. The starting shaft is made from a weldless steel tube butted at the after end. We believe that we can get these tubes quite easily. The form of the starting jaws shewn is as indicated on LeC.1312, and the taper plug in the engine starting jaw secured by rolling or riveting over.

We intend to send you an adaptation of this arrangement to the "Kite" tomorrow or Monday.
