-5- Item 7 on agenda. Instruction books and Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}22/E24.2.32, Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid{A. J. Lidsey}3/MA29.2.32 and BY/Cgh{W Clough}1/G9.3.32. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} and BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} briefly discussed features of Bentley and RR. instruction books. Item 8 on agenda. Controllable shock dampers. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}6/MJ4.3.32 and Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}3/E8.3.32. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} reported that DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} was working on this and will adapt J.III controllable dampers to P.II chassis. A temporary scheme will be ready in a few days. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} said that we look like having the controllable dampers about the time that other people are leaving them and adopting automatic control. We should therefore work on automatic control simultaneously with hand control. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} said they had schemes for both methods in hand and the automatic control would go forward. Item 9 on agenda. Gearboxes. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/MJ27.2.32 and Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}18/E2.3.32. The question of applying the synchro mesh to all four gears was discussed and E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} stated that there was no design difficulty about this, but it should be borne in mind that there will be four pairs of gears constantly in mesh and always running. It was agreed that E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} should go ahead with a design of box for J.III with all forward speeds having synchro mesh applied. Item 10 on agenda. Chassis wiring and Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wat2/AD7.3.32. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} asked what action was being taken on West's suggestion and whether we were waiting for R.{Sir Henry Royce} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} said that we were not waiting for R.{Sir Henry Royce} and we could adopt systoflex wiring for J.III, Peregrine and Bensport, and inform R.{Sir Henry Royce} that we were doing so. There would be plenty of time for R.{Sir Henry Royce} to comment if he wished to do so before any actual manufacture had taken place. It was agreed that this should be done. Item 11 on agenda. Woodhead Springs. See Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}23/E20.1.32 and Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}9/T26.1.32. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} quoted the costs of RR springs and Bentley springs and commented on the great difference in cost. He suggested that Woodhead's, Samuel Fox and maybe others be asked to specify what they suggest as suitable springs for J.III. | ||
