H.4.9.36 Referring to By.9/G.10.9.36 and BY/EM.10/J.10.9.36 I should like to hear from you as to what you suggest doing in order to reduce our difficulty in obtaining satisfactory and reliable springs. At the last conference I was rather amazed to hear that, when Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} had the valve spring trouble in America on the Bentley, he was able to get some springs quickly made up by a spring maker in America which gave perfectly satisfactory results and I think he said that the replacements sent out from England again gave trouble. The trend of opinion during the discussion was that it was not a question of material but of design, which imposed such heavy stresses on the material, and it does seem extraordinary to me as a non-technical person with 30 years or more in the motor-car business that we should in these days be having this valve spring trouble.
