x3692. OY-6 August 9th, 1929. Mr. R.W.H. Bailey, Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby, England. c - Mr. Hives RECEIVED Dear Mr. Bailey: SILENCER - SECTION 5230 A-13614 shows a detail change to the silencer. Fitting the central tube to slide in all the baffles proved difficult and a certain amount of slack had to be allowed which tended in some cases to cause rattles. It was therefore proposed to hold the tube at the ends only (as the inner tube is held) and allow clearance at the intermediate baffles. This was done and ran 10,000 miles without trouble. Noise of exhaust was not noticeably affected, but a small increase of power on chassis dynamometer was shown (curves A and B SK-320 attached) We think this is a slight simplification which is worth while for freedom from rattle, increased power, and slight decrease in production cost. Very truly yours, ROLLS ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. Maurice Olley | ||
