Inspection report for Bentley Chassis No. 6.B.IV after a 15,000-mile road test, focusing on the condition of the gearbox.

BENTLEY CHASSIS NO. 6.B.IV. The above chassis, after completing 15,000 miles road test, has been in the Experimental Department for inspection of the following units :- 1. Gearbox - built to specification HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/NHB.1/VS.{J. Vickers}10.12.37. and HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/NHB.4/BA.28.1.38. The general condition of the sections of the gearbox assembly is as follows :- Gearbox and Actuating Gear. The gearbox, except for the development of a small crack on one of the servo bracket stud bosses, is in good condition. All parts on the selector mechanism are satisfactory. 1st Motion Shaft. Condition satisfactory. 3rd Motion Shaft. The 3rd motion shaft is in satisfactory condition except for hard marks on the driving side of the splines caused by the 3rd and 4th sliding piece; the diameter of the shaft is also marked, evidently due to loose ball races. The wear on the diameters of the BZ/PC bushes in the 3rd speed gear does not exceed .0015; the end float on these bushes has increased from .005 before test to .006 after test. The 2nd speed driven gear is in good condition, and the oil scoop fitted to this appears to be satisfactory. Servo worm gear - condition good. The condition of the 1st speed driving gear is satisfactory. The 3rd speed overdrive gear is in good condition. The bedding on all gear teeth is satisfactory. continued. | ||
