Re Special Chassis for Worm Axle and Standard Engine. ----------------- With reference to your memorandum TBB10/L6312, we must put the engine where it is required to clear the road by a reasonable amount. We assume that you have done so. Don't lift it any higher. Are we not clever enough to get the starting shaft through the tube neatly ? Increase the size of the tube, re-inforce the centre, smack the shaft through it. [Sketch of a shaft through a tube] clear of shafting. Surely it can be made neater than the one sent. [Sketch of a bearing or coupling] Smallest diameter nickel steel, solid, to give same strength (but in a material which has a higher elastic limit) as present starting handle; rigidity no importance. Spring could be down near bearing on engine, - cleaner looking. The starting dogs would have to be fitted in a manner so that they could be easily detached to allow of starting gear being dismantled.
