Axle ratio.
No car should be turned out with a higher gear ratio than 3 to 1, i.e. the 24 tooth gear or its equivalent in coarse pitch axle should be abandoned.
It is desirable that for heavy bodies the gear should be about 3.3 to 1 ratio and that the lightest bodies should be as near as possible 3 to 1 ratio.
With worm axles these ratios should be increased by from 5 to 10% owing to the less efficiency of this gearing.
