X.4056 RE REAR ROAD SPRINGS.

In accordance with Mr Royce's instructions given some little while ago, we have been designing a road spring with a greater number of thinner leaves, Mr Royce's instruction being to use on any one spring two thicknesses of plate, namely the top plate, of one thickness and the remainder of the plates another thickness. The ends of the plates to be square, with a radius in accordance with instructions we have recently given to Messrs Woodhead. Mr Royce has examined our spring drawing and made no particular comments, and we should like to ask Messrs Wodheads, and also Mr Fawcett of Firths to go into the question of these springs, with a view to making experimental sets for bumping and road test, and also to consider their manufacture for standard as soon as the present stock of thick plates is exhausted. But we think it would be unwise to give them instructions to press ahead with this spring until we have had the experimental sets.

Please therefore receive two blue prints of "N" Scheme 391 which shews two springs for 2,100 and 2,000 lbs respectively designed on this principal, and to which we should like the experimental sets to be made.
