1280. AWD/BR 2nd. April 1937 Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /Std.12/AP. Messrs John Marston Ltd., WOLVERHAMPTON For the attention of Mr.Dunn. Dear Sirs, This is to confirm that Mr.Dunn will visit these works at approximately 12.0 a.m. on Monday next in order to interview our general manager, Mr.Hives. The writer will also take the opportunity of Mr.Dunn's visit to discuss with him the question of Ph.III. radiator shells in mild steel chromium plated. We have received the sample shell which you have sent us, but while the sharp edges and plating seem satisfactory, we are very disappointed with the appearance of the shell as a whole, owing to the small ripples which can be seen under the chrome plate, the waviness of the side plates and hammer marks etc. on the front plate. We note your remark that some of these defects can be cured by using special mild steel strip, but are at a loss to understand why you have not used such strip in the construction of this shell, which was to be a demonstration of the practicability of using mild steel chromium plated. We could not consider asking our Sales Dept. to standardise such a shell as the one you have sent us - we shall run it on a car to see whether the chrome will last satisfactorily, but unless you can make the chromium plated surface as smooth and plane as the 'Staybrite' ones, we fear that it will be impossible to depart from 'Staybrite'. However, we can discuss these points in detail on Monday. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
