RE STATIONERY.

Hitherto it has been the practice for all Stationery requisitions to be brought to this office for countersigning, which was originally rendered necessary in order to check the enormous waste.

In view of the amount of routine work which this procedure involves, and also the large proportion of messengers' time which is taken up, it has been decided that in future Stationery orders may be taken direct to the Stationery Stores, where Miss Squires will carefully scrutinise all requisitions presented. Any queries will be referred to me. No stationery will be issued without the signature of some responsible person.

Will you kindly instruct your staff accordingly.

It is still felt that the use of stationery is unnecessarily wasteful. As an example, foolscap envelopes are frequently used for small memoranda when a small, previously used envelope, sealed with a gummed slip, would be quite adequate. For inter-departmental memoranda, especially when sent direct by messenger, a gummed slip only is usually sufficient. White envelopes should only be used for outgoing letters.
