- 5 - HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth}1/VS.{J. Vickers}23.9.37. Carburetter Air Silencer (Continued). rivets were loose and the shell was in good condition. The filter element, though dirty on the outside, was clean inside. Slight damage had been done at the rear end by a fire which was experienced on test, but this was not serious. The fire was caused by the failure of the flexible petrol feed pipe, the leaking petrol being ignited by a sparking plug. Dynamo and Water Pump Drive LOP.E.87051. Ex.27901. A/C. Distance Piece. This was in good condition and free from cracks. Idler Gear LOP.E.86994. R.86982. Fine Grain Fabroil Gear. This was a great improvement on the previous coarse grain gears which developed excessive backlash. Between the Idler Wheel and Dynamo Pinion the backlash varies from .004 to .007 measured at the pitch line. It should be recalled that the backlash in the Idler Wheel on 35-EX after a similar mileage in France was .022. Ignition Governor and Drive LOP.E.84946. The Main Spindle and Bearing were in good condition, though rather tight. Wear had taken place, however, in the governor parts, resulting in lost movement of the automatic advance. Wear had occurred at the hole for the pin in the inner cam spindle and outer sleeve and on the pin itself, also on the ball pins of the outer sleeves, the slots for same and in the centre holes of the governor arms. This wear is usual, and has been reported on from time to time. Better lubrication should be provided; these parts were quite dry. The inner Cam Spindle, although bearing signs of rust, were free in the Main Spindle (see electrical report). Water Pump LOP.E.87052. General condition satisfactory. continued. | ||
