Re: SEIZURE OF BRAKE MECHANISM ON BENTLEY 3 1/2 & 4 1/4 LITRE CHASSIS.
---------------------

With reference to our VA5/ET.5.I.38, a copy of which you possess, By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} has written to us upon the matter (as per By/MTN19/N 24.I.38), concerning water entering the brake drums and he says that this could be considerably reduced by deleting the eight small holes which are provided to let out the dust from the brake liners. How-ever, By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} says that, before definitely deciding on this, he will discuss the matter with you when you next visit the Works.

(CHASSIS B-21-HM{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs})
For your information, we have had to attend to Kerna-vanois' car after a mileage of 16,596 miles, owing to a complaint from the owner of inefficient brakes etc...

Upon dismantling the rear drums, we found the brake mechanism to be plastered in mud. The pins of the toggle forks were absolutely seized up and we had to remove the dust covers before we could remove the shoes.

The CB.202I cadmium plated steel bush was also found to be very tight in the shoes and had to be driven out of position. Before re-erecting the shoes, we passed an expanding reamer through the pivot holes in the shoes in order to remove the corrosion which had taken place.

Will you kindly point this out to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} when next you see him.

Sr. saw the brake mechanism of the above car and was surprised at the condition of it.

Sr/VA.VA.
