As a result of visiting both Messrs Barker's and Messrs Hooper's works and discussing the sample set of stays which were sent to them we have reached the following conclusions:- (1) That a standard set of Phantom wings were supplied to Derby for 12 EX. and that we instructed the curvature of the stays to be set out to suit these Barker wings. It must therefore be assumed that the wings were bent or beaten in Derby as the stays supplied to Barkers do not suit their standard wing. Both Barkers and Hoopers complain of the same fault, namely that the inside valance rises too vertically, causing the wing to look fat and the bonnet catch to be difficult to operate. To put this matter square we have asked both parties to send us at W.W. sheet metal templates shewing the section of the wing at the stays concerned when it is anticipated the a curve which will suit all will be indicated. We have yet to send them a layout shewing how and where to get these templets out. This we will do at the first convenient opportunity. (2) We will arrange to make the forward stay detachable without slacking off the bolts holding the front Cross member. (3) We will also arrange the wiring so that the wing can be removed without drawing the wiring out of the stay, by fitting connectors on the chassis side channel for both head and side lamp wires. The wire inside the stay will be in a metal tube. (4) We agree fixing a lamp centre at 12.250 above the top of the frame, and to letting the horizontal distance between the centres come to what it may when a reasonable gap between the wing and the lamp is allowed. We anticipate that the centre distance will be approximately 28.750 ins. (5) We agree to putting a packing .250in. thick between the stay and the frame to allow for the wing thickness and the jointing material. As soon as we are able to get the templets fromn the coach-builders we instruct Derby to make a further two sample sets to be sent to you. We do not anticipate that the actual design of the stay will be altered, save in the bending. EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} | ||
