PEREGRINE LUGGAGE GRID.

EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} went to Derby as suggested with a view to hearing Derby's criticisms of the Peregrine luggage grid as given to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} at a meeting in Derby.

We were surprised to find that no such grid has been made for Peregrine, the only grid of the type existing being on J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3., and that an obsolete design. The modifications instructed some little while ago on N. sch. 3547. have not been added.

After discussing the matter with everyone concerned in Derby we received no concrete suggestion for any modification to the existing design to cheapen it. Sft.{Mr Swift} has the estimated labour time for construction, but we obtained no actual figures for the cost. We are asking Derby to send us these when they get them.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} criticises the design as possibly being costly, and has made suggestions for another type of grid which we had previously considered and turned down because it entailed:
(1) a numberplate mounted on the wing,
(2) a petrol tank different from the one we now have, and of less capacity.

In view of all we learned we think that it is too soon to come to any definite conclusions concerning the Peregrine luggage grid, and that Derby should make a grid and apron and fit it to a car before we throw away the design and start looking for a completely different scheme.

After their experience of making this grid we would welcome any concrete suggestions that would improve the design or reduce the cost. We propose doing nothing until the experimental grid has been made, and a test report received by this dept.

It did not seem to be appreciated that the grid is not an integral part of the chassis, but can be supplied as an extra and charged for if so desired. It would merely mean that when it was not required an apron with a lid{A. J. Lidsey} would be replaced by a plain apron, which we imagine could be produced for a sum under 10/- judging by the cost of the front apron.

We suggest therefore that the standard chassis would be supplied fitted with a plain apron, and an extra charge made for the luggage grid with its apron. As a check on costs we may subsequently get a quotation for the supply of these grids from outside.
