Oy3-E-112824 -2- November 28, 1924. (a) Springs below blocks (cont'd.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary}) We therefore submit the change to England with confidence that it is a definite improvement in the permanency of this part in service. (b) Lubrication. As explained on the proposal sheet at 1101 the coupling will be less accessible for lubrication even than at present, and already it escapes attention. We have therefore looked round for means to lubricate this effectively. Under proposal sheet No.26 we obtained England's approval of our scheme for lubricating the clutch trunnion through a hollow pivot pin. After considering and trying various alternatives we found that the scheme shown in A-6140 herewith answered best. By this the overflow of oil from the trunnion is conducted into the forward end of the coupling through the spout A-5997. This change was mentioned under proposal sheet No.40. The bore of the forward coupling ring is increased from 1.895 to 2.000 dia. to allow proper clearance around the spout. The clutch hub is reduced from 1.620 across flats to 1.520 across flats to allow the spout to slip over it and suitable hardened and ground adjusting washers are used below the blocks. The holes and standpipes in the coupling tube are of course omitted, which avoids the splashing of oil from the stand pipes and entry of dirt which are objections to the present means of lubrication. The scheme has now been tried on 102 GE for about 5000 miles and on 102 CX{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} for about 4 weeks. We find that it is easy to put a syringe full of oil into the coupling practically without any leakage, so long as the operation is done while the engine is running. As stated under proposal sheet No.40, the leakage at the front face of the trunnion is very slight because of the close fit. Actually it is not more than is required to lubricate the bottom ball joint of the clutch operating lever F-7112. Lubrication while the engine is running is instructed on the oiler provided under the bonnet which will be shown under proposal sheet No.45. NO/E Oy. | ||
