Hanbury - Head Complaints} Royce Works Committee London File Mr. Nadin From: Mr. Olley Re Proposal Sheet No.42 Engine Coupling The rapid development of noise in the engine coupling has been troublesome to us for a considerable time. It has been referred to England several times under various alteration numbers. We believe that the final solution of the matter would be to abandon the De Dion type of coupling and substitute two small universal joints like the "Weiss" joint with a sliding joint and suitable oil covers. We are therefore very interested to note that Mr. Royce is interested in the particulars of the Weiss joint recently sent, and are doing our best to procure samples for him. (a) Springs below blocks. Meanwhile however we have to admit that cars which have run only 3000 miles come in with definite coupling noise. Examination of the couplings for wear, hardness etc. show the parts to be practically as they left us, and correct in every way, except that minute wear has taken place, not measurable but enough to allow the coupling to move freely endways. This condition appears to be enough to set up noise. Installing spring washers (Thackeray) K-5805 in the ends of cross pins A-5225 to give a light outward pressure on the blocks, will cure this coupling noise without any other changes, presumably by the light friction set up between block and coupling ring. Our fear has been that the spring washers would lead to rapid wear of the curved surface of the block where it touches the coupling ring. We are now able to state that on car 102 CX{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} (L.H.steering) which has run 10,500 miles with these parts, the total wear across the two blocks is not more than .002 and the coupling is in good condition and silent. | ||
