GRY{Shadwell Grylls} 4728 E.1/HP.14.8.35. To Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} c. Mor. C. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} HX. HDY.{William Hardy} re Complaints of 2nd Gear Jumping out on P.2. Cars. Referring to your memo Ld.20/HP.13.8.35, this confirms that we have issued a special plunger spring with a stronger load to retard the working out of the gear. We only regard this however as a palliative and not as a permanent cure. We think that it will eventually be necessary to fit new gears to effect a cure. In the case of the 460 and odd cars which have gone through production with exactly the same type of change speed, there has not been the slightest tendency noticeable in the dynamometer tests on second speed for this gear to work out although the point has been specially watched in view of experiences on other gearboxes. The epidemic of 5 cars however having this trouble in hilly country cannot be passed over lightly, and we are making a careful examination of the matter from every point of view. We are also proposing to try an experiment with the equivalent of a worn bushing on the gear, to see if this can be made to reproduce the trouble. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
