EXPERIMENTAL MAGNETOS FOR NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I CHASSIS.

Further to our EFC1/T8.12.25, we have now received visits from the representatives of, and magnetos from :-

(1) Messrs. The Lucas Elec. Co.
(2) Messrs. Simms (Motor Units) Ltd.

The representatives of these two firms were respectively Dr. E.O. Turner, and Mr. Bryan. In each case they brought with them magnetos for preliminary tests, one in the former case and two in the latter, though in the latter case the magnetos do not purport to meet our specification as regards weight, being made up with bronze castings, which could be replaced by aluminium castings to get the weight within our limit. Neither of these magnetos is of the sleeve type, but in each case the makers claim to have obtained the range required by us (58 magneto degrees) by specially shaping the pole pieces. We have already confirmed this in the Lucas case.

It is anticipated that in each case the magnetos will give satisfactory operation with the exception that probably the contact breakers will be noisy, this being a very difficult item to reduce sufficiently to suit our New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I chassis.

As regards the details of construction of these two machines, please find attached copy of my assistant's report WB.{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell}64 for the Lucas case, and WB.{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell}71 for the Simms case.
