In the Lucas magneto case the electrical performance has already been observed, but this will be made the subject of a separate report, together with that of the Simms, at a later date.

We are not putting the Lucas machine on an experimental car, because we have received a letter from Dr. Turner to the effect that he is making one or two alterations to the contact breaker and gears with a view to obtaining quieter running, which modifications he proposed to submit to us shortly in a further machine. He asks us to be good enough to consider the machine already submitted to us solely with a view to determining its suitability to conform with the rest of our specification, which is mostly of an electrical nature.

We shall probably put one of the Simms magnetos on a car for the purpose of getting an idea of the noisiness or otherwise of the machine. Actually the majority of magnetos made by Messrs. Simms are for commercial vehicles where weight is not of great importance, but robustness and reliability are of prime importance. It would appear, therefore, that our requirements differ from these, mainly in that we require the machine lightening by replacing the bronze castings with aluminium.
