Re Magneto Rattles at low speeds.
Mr Platford had that morning demonstrated to the Committee, a magneto rattle which he was troubled with at low speeds. The Committee appreciated the importance of this trouble. This was caused by the uneven turning moment on the magneto armature shaft rattling the gear driving the magneto distributor. The rattle could be cured by slightly damping by pressure, the distributor spindle.
Mr Platford informed the Committee that this trouble could be overcome by making the gears much more tightly; this had been attended to by the Bosch Co. for a short period, but we could not rely upon them delivering magnetos with the gears meshed to our satisfaction.
Mr Nadin informed the Committee that he had done all that was possible in this direction, but the difficulty he had had to contend with, was that the number of magnetos we ordered from the Bosch Co. was so extremely small when compared with their total output, that we could hardly expect them to alter their system of manufacture to any extent, as the point we raised was not really of importance to the majority of users.
