UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW 2. problem purely as a speculation & have therefore no claim on you. But though I neither claim nor ask any financial recognition of my efforts on your behalf I suggest that your Firm might consider presenting this Department with a piece of machinery of some kind. At present I have the job of reorganising our workshop & getting in some new machines, lathes etc, & as the University is in a very impecunious condition I find it impossible to do much on the sum allowed for the purpose. I wonder if you realise what an uphill job it is trying to rig a decent workshop & laboratory in the face of lack of funds & an almost entire lack of encouragement by those Firms who benefit by our activities. It is customary for the said Firms to refer in condescending terms to our students as the raw material from which they (by a great effort) make practical engineers; but the fact remains that producing the raw material in a suitable state for immediate use is no mean task. An institution of this kind cannot possibly be self supporting & I have therefore no hesitation | ||
