Dear Sirs,
RE: Your Replacement Order No. R.{Sir Henry Royce} 16835.
With reference to your letter of the 17th inst. addressed to our Birmingham Office, we confirm the explanation given you by our Birmingham Representative regarding the extreme difficulty of manufacturing this cable within the prescribed limits of diameter.
It will be appreciated that in covering the conductor with a thickness of such an elastic material as this special rubber compound, it is very difficult indeed to ensure that the required thickness of insulation is provided, and at the same time, the maximum diameter of .276" is not exceeded, particularly when it is remembered that the rubber has to be vulcanised after application - a heat-treatment process during which the material is liable to swell.
