To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EFC. c. BJ E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. PN.{Mr Northey} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. OY. ORIGINAL EFCL/T30.3.28. X4040 X8780 X4008 DYNAMO-BATTERY SYSTEM. We now recognise three kinds of complaint, each of which occurs in its own peculiar circumstances which do not need further description. (1) Low speed (frequent starting and standing) undercharge, and consequent over-discharge of the battery. (2) Medium speed overcharging when there is little or no demand on the system. (3) High speed under-output and therefore over-discharge of the battery during powerful lighting at night. To overcome these complaints various proposals have been put forward :- (a) That of the auto charge control switch, or alternatively that of the green lamp scheme. (b) That of the higher speed cutting-in, higher output armature. (c) That of so modifying the control arrangements of the dynamo that without altering the cutting-in and early stage output we get more output in the later stages. Of the above proposals - (a) caters only for (2), without affecting (1) and (3). Of these two alternative proposals, the auto charge control switch, in our opinion, better meets the case, and in addition gives a big element of protection against faults in the system which would otherwise not be provided against. (b), which we have now got under way experimentally will probably cater for (3) completely, but will, when alone applied, aggravate (1) and (2), if circumstances permit. Contd. | ||
