TO BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM AJS. C. to - BJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL X8300 AJS1/M21.7.26. PHANTOM - CLUTCH No. 4. X8300 We send herewith LeC. 2275. shewing an improved, lightened, and simplified clutch for the above chassis. The chief features of this clutch are:- (1) The combined weight of clutch, flywheel, and universal joint are reduced about 20 lbs., there is a proportional reduction in the flywheel inertia. (2) The universal joint has been considerably simplified, lightened 3 lbs., and should cost far less to manufacture than the previous scheme. (3) The whole clutch has been shortened. (4) The 4 retaining plates holding and squaring up the disc in position while erecting have been abandoned, necessitating the removal of clutch springs. (5) The 4 damping ring travel limiting plates have been removed, the travel being now limited by the front portion of clutch overlapping the edge of damping ring, but 4 screws are supplied for retaining the ring when dismantling and erecting. Two screws and a cross bar being used for pressing down the ring while the first two are being put in position. (6) The clutch casing has been modified to take up considerably less room as regards dia., but a drawing of this unit will be supplied later, with a scheme for lubricating the clutch lever fulcrum on both existing No.3 clutches and No.4. The clutch stop is as hitherto. We should be glad if the Exp. Dept. would supply us with a copy of the table shewn on HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/ACL/T10.6.26. with an additional column dealing with the above clutch as soon as possible. AJS. | ||
